MISSED BREAK: Janet Chapman is resting up after she
was found to have a leg fracture nearly a week after
going to the emergency department at Taranaki Base Hospital. A New Plymouth woman is calling for doctors to listen
more closely to their patients after her broken leg went
undiagnosed at the emergency department. The Taranaki District Health Board confirmed yesterday
it was looking into the complaint and would take any
action necessary. Janet Chapman told the Taranaki Daily News she had a
painful fall at her home on May 30, collapsing on to
her legs. She called for an ambulance and was taken to Taranaki
Base Hospital's emergency department. But she claims the doctor failed to listen to her when she
said both her leg and ankle were painful. Only her ankle
was X-rayed. A sprained ankle was diagnosed and she said she was sent
home with crutches. "I went home but the pain in the side of my leg was still there." Six days later she went to her GP and an X-ray uncovered a
fracture in the neck of the fibula below the knee. A trip to a private emergency clinic was ineffectual when
the doctors there wanted her referred to the hospital to
an orthopaedic registrar. "The whole week was turning into a French farce." On Wednesday she had an appointment with an orthopaedic
surgeon and she was put in a cast. "So I was very fortunate he was able to see me." Ms Chapman, who has been a mental health advocate and
peer support person in the past, says her experience led
her to file a complaint with Taranaki DHB's customer
relations officer. "I would like to see doctors take notice of what patients
say. I want to see more accountability from the hospital." Many people were not strong enough to stick up for
themselves, she said. "People don't know they have the right to complain or
ask for a second opinion." Taranaki DHB hospital general manager Rosemary Clements
confirmed a complaint had been received and was being
investigated. "We take all complaints seriously and have a customer
services process in our DHB to investigate any patient
concerns. "We do not discuss individual patients with the media but
please be assured we are looking into this and we are now
in contact with Mrs Chapman to ensure she gets answers
to her questions," Mrs Clements said.
